LIMA, Ohio (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The Madonna University women's golf team opened its 2010 fall slate in impressive fashion on Friday (August 27), firing a team total of 345 to lead the field at the University of Northwestern Ohio Invitational by six strokes at Hawthorne Hills Golf Club.
The Crusaders were able to bring two separate teams to the event and the Crusader "B" team sits in third place with a round of 372.
Sophomore Michelle Hall (Flushing, Mich. / Flushing) leads the Crusaders with an 83 to sit in fourth place. A trio of Crusaders sits in a four-way tie for fifth place as seniors Sara Simnitch (Swartz Creek, Mich. / Swartz Creek) and Caitlin Steele (Livonia, Mich. / Divine Child Catholic) along with freshman Kaitlyn Brasher (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc) carded rounds of 86, three shots behind Hall. Brasher - making her collegiate debut - led the "B" team for MU.
Junior Chelsea Bathurst (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and sophomore Elena Thomas (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland) are tied for 10th place after rounds of 90 while junior Mariel Meyers (Westland, Mich. / Franklin) is tied for 12th with a 91 and sophomore Megan Fleischer (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Marian Catholic) carded a 97 to sit in a tie for 17th place. Newcomer Chelsea Osburn (Canton, Mich. / Canton) - also making her collegiate debut - carded a 99 to place 19th after day one.
"While I'm happy to be in first place, I think we left a lot of shots out on the course today," commented Head Coach Scott Marzolino following the round. "We brought everyone with us this weekend and had two student-athletes make their debuts and Brasher played very well for her first collegiate event. I'd like to see us improve from today and correct the mistakes."
The Crusaders wrap up their opening weekend of play on Saturday (Aug. 28) with the final round of the UNOH Invite with a 9am shotgun start.
