GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - It was announced Friday (July 16) that Madonna University Director of Sports Information and Athletic Communications Patrick Moore has been selected as the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference's (WHAC) Mike Dean Sports Information Director of the Year following a vote of the league's sports information directors.
Moore - a 2003 graduate of Madonna University with a bachelor of arts in journalism and public relations - is the third winner of the award that is named after the long time WHAC statistician Mike Dean of Aquinas College.
"To win an award that is voted upon by my peers is truly humbling," commented Moore following the announcement. "It is an honor to win an award that is named after someone in Mike Dean who was a mentor to me as a student and taught me a lot about how to do what we do in this business. I want to thank
Bryan Rizzo,
Matt Fancett and
Tony Baldwin who all preceded me in the role of SID here at Madonna. They set the bar very high and I am just trying to raise it. I would be remiss if I did not thank my student staff who works with me on a daily basis. I will put that group up against any in the country for their hard work and dedication. I would also like to thank our coaches and student-athletes here because with out them and the great things they do both on and off the court, there is no need for a sports information director."
In just three years since returning to his alma mater after a stint as the Assistant Sports Information Director at the University of Detroit Mercy, Moore made his mark on Crusader sports. He serves as the primary contact for MU's 11 varsity teams and can be heard as the radio voice for volleyball, soccer, baseball and softball. During the fall of 2008, Moore supervised the overhaul of Madonna's new media strategy, including a redesign of the athletics Web site. This pas year he created the athletic department's presence on various social media and networking sites including YouTube, Twitter and Facebook along with bringing live interactive game day blogs to Crusader Nation's legions of fans.
The WHAC also benefits from Moore's expertise. During his tenure, he served as the host media director for 10 WHAC championships in addition to multiple NAIA events and developed several conference publications. At the national level, he currently serves on the NAIA-SIDA Statistics Committee to review statistical procedures and milestones in the nearly 300-member association. Moore is also a national voter for the association's Player of the Week honor program and is a member of
College Sports Information Directors of America's (CoSIDA) Publications Committee, having served as a contest coordinator twice. Moore is currently a member of the United States Basketball Writers' Association as well as the Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association.
"I can not think of a more deserving recipient of the Mike Dean WHAC SID of the Year award than Patrick," said
Matt Fancett, former MU Assistant Athletic Director and current director of communications for Ford Racing. "Seeing Patrick's tireless work for Madonna University and the WHAC recognized is a great moment for Patrick and Madonna University Athletics. He is constantly reaching to make himself better, assist other SIDs in the league, better promote Madonna University athletics and the WHAC as a whole, which are all the key characteristics of the man the award was named after."
Moore's traditional print publications have earned national accolades galore as over 20 of the media guides he has been a part of have been honored by CoSIDA or the NAIA-Sports Information Directors Association. The last three Madonna University volleyball media guides (2007, 2008, 2009) have all taken home top national honors from NAIA-SIDA.
"Patrick is the utmost professional," said Madonna Athletics Director
Bryan Rizzo. "His work ethic, dedication and commitment can be seen in his work every day. Madonna is very lucky to have Patrick."
