Sierra Riker (with uniform)
LIVONIA, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - -Madonna University head women's basketball coach Carl Graves announced Friday (June 11) that he has signed Sierra Riker (Ionia, Mich./Portland) to a letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic careers at Madonna starting this fall.
"I'm very happy that Sierra will join the program," commented Graves following the signing. "She comes from a great family in which her parents have taught her the value of having great work ethic. Growing up and working on a farm isn't always easy and Sierra certainly has gotten her hands dirty more than a few times. Riker is a winner as she has proven over and over again at Portland. Her leadership potential will be a welcome addition to the team, and she certainly gets it done in the classroom as well. Coach (Ray) Kimball gives her so much credit in much of his team's success. She led Portland to the state semi-finals this past season where the Raiders lost to the eventual state champion and had a 64-13 career record at Portland. MU assistant John Kenger was instrumental in recruiting this young lady and he also is excited for Sierra. We're looking forward to helping her grow into the college game."
The 5-5 guard, Riker was named the 2010 Portland High School Athlete of the Year and led the Raiders to three state regional and district titles to go along with a pair of state semi-final appearances. A two-time Ionia-Area Dream Team selection (2009, '10), Riker capped her career with an all-area selection as a senior. Riker also stands out on the softball diamond, earning all-state honors as a junior (2009).
Riker joins Carrie Kloster (Ida, Mich./Ida), Rachel Melcher (Sterling Heights, Mich./Bloomfield Hills Marian Catholic) and Kayleigh McCollum (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon Catholic Central) and Rebecca Wojcinski (Waterford, Mich./Mott)as new additions to the MU roster for 2010-11.
Madonna advanced to the 2010 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title game for the third time in four seasons and lost just one senior following the 2009-10 season.
