RAPID CITY, S.D. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The Madonna University women's golf team continued play at the 2010 NAIA National Championships at Meadowbrook Golf Course on Wednesday (May 26) and a pair of Crusaders lowered their totals from day one as MU jumped up one spot into 20th place with an identical round of 355 to match Tuesday's opening round.
"We started out well," commented Head Coach Scott Marzolino, "But struggled on the back nine again. If we can come out tomorrow and put together a complete round I think we can make a nice leap in the standings."
Junior Mariel Meyers (Westland, Mich./Franklin) had the biggest jump, knocking three shots off of her score from round one to card an 86. Meyers opened her round with five pars on the front nine before running into trouble on the back nine. The final nine holes saw Meyers record a birdie on No. 14 but the junior was unable to match her performance on the front nine and posted just two pars on the back side and ended the day in a tie for 90th.
Fellow junior Caitlin Steele (Livonia, Mich./Divine Child Catholic) lowered her second round score by a stroke to tally a 98 on day two. Steele tallied four pars on the day and sits in 121st place.
Fellow junior Sara Simnitch (Swartz Cree, Mich./Swartz Creek/Mott CC) started the day with a bogey but rebounded to start a run of five pars on the front nine before closing the day with an 88 to tie for 90th with Meyers and freshman Michelle Hall.
Hall (Flushing, Mich./Flushing) posted a birdie on No. 4 and collected four pars on the day to match Simnitch with an 88.
Rounding out the MU contingent was sophomore Chelsea Bathurst (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson/Schoolcraft CC) who collected five pars on the day to finish the round in a tie for 113th place.
The Crusaders play round three of the 2010 NAIA National Championships on Thursday (May 27).
