LIVONIA, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - Madonna University head women's soccer coach Jeff Hodgson announced Wednesday (May 26) that he has signed three student athletes - Kristin Black (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood), Amanda Ferrick (Warren, Mich./Cousino) and Kirsten Hass (Flint, Mich./Kearsley) - to letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers starting this fall.
"I think that I'm being as honest as possible when I say that I think these are three players that can come in and start right away," commented Hodgson. "They are strong and athletic and have their best soccer ahead of them. I plan on all three of them to play right away."
A member of the National Honor Society, Black is a four-year letter winner at Crestwood High School where she is currently playing for former Crusader Anthony DeMarco on the soccer pitch. Black is a two-time all-district and all-league (2008, '09) selection and was named all-state, all-region and team Most Valuable Player as a junior last season. In addition she has also earned letters on the basketball and volleyball floors where she was coached by former Crusader All-American Tera Woodruff.
"I can put Kristin anywhere on the field," said Hodgson. "She can play in the back or up in the midfield. She has a lot of potential and up-side for us."
A four-time all-academic selection at Warren Cousino, Ferrick has earned four letters in soccer to go along with two in basketball. She is a two-time all-district and All-Macomb County selection. As a junior (2009) Ferrick was tabbed to the Macomb Area Conference first team and was selected as her team's Most Valuable Player.
"Amanda is very strong," commented Hodgson. "She will win a lot of balls for us and is very creative and dangerous in the midfield."
Rounding out the trio of new Crusaders is Hass. Hass graduated with honors from Kearsley High School after earning letters in both soccer and volleyball. A three-time team All-Big 9 Conference, all-district and all-region selection, Hass capped her career with the Hornets as an all-state selection as a senior (2008). Hass was the first soccer player in Kearsley history to earn all-conference first team honors as a freshman.
"Kirsten is coming to us as a transfer," added Hodgson. "She is a bit older and more experienced type of player who is very fast and that is an asset that will help us a lot."
The 2010 season - which begins in August - will be Hodgson's first at the helm of the Crusaders.
