RAPID CITY, S.D. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The Madonna University women's golf team made history on Tuesday afternoon (May 25) as the Crusaders took the first swings at the 2010 NAIA National Championships at the Meadowbrook Golf Course. This marks the program's first ever appearance at the national summit after the Crusaders won the 2010 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title last fall.

Teeing off from the 10th hole, the Crusaders made their way around the course and stand in 21st place after an opening round score of 355 on the 6,000 yard course. The University of British Columbia leads second place Oklahoma City University by seven strokes.

"After a shortened practice round yesterday, we were excited to get out and play today," commented WHAC Coach of the Year Scott Marzolino. "We left a few shots on the course today that I know the kids would like to have back but we can learn from that for tomorrow's round. To be at the National Championships shows how far our program has come in such a short time."

A pair of Crusaders - Sara Simnitch (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek/Mott CC) and Michelle Hall (Flushing, Mich./Flushing) - lead the squad with identical rounds of 87. Both Hall and Simnitch posted par on six holes to tie for 83rd place among the 128 golfers.

Junior Mariel Meyers (Westland, Mich./Franklin) is two shots behind Hall and Simnitch after a round of 89. Meyers round was highlighted with a birdie on the 312-yard 16th hole to put Meyers in a tie for 94th place.

Sophomore Chelsea Bathurst (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson/Schoolcraft) turned in a 92 with four pars and a birdie on number 17 to land in a tie for 112th place after 18 holes.

Rounding out the MU contingent was junior Caitlin Steele (Livonia, Mich./Divine Child Catholic) who is in 122nd place after carding a round of 99. Steele turned in five pars, second most on the day for the Crusaders.

The Crusaders return to the course on Wednesday (May 26) starting with 10:45am EDT tee times.
