NAIA MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY ONE RESULTS
SILVIS ILL. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The Madonna University men's golf team made program history on Tuesday (May 18) as the squad finished its first round at the 2010 NAIA National Championships at TPC Deere Run in Silvis Ill., with a team round of 304, kicking off the program's first ever appearance at the national summit.
WHAC individual medalist Brett Quitiquit (Highland, Mich./Milford/Oakland Univ.) led the way for the Crusaders by turning in a three under par round of 68 on the day placing him tied for second place overall in the 154 player field. Quitiquit is just one stoke behind tournament leader Axel Ochoa of Oklahoma Christian University, who shot a four under 67 in the opening round.
James Uelmen (Ferndale, Mich./Dondero/Oakland CC) shot a 78on the day and is tied for the 89th position in the field. Tommy Lucko (Livonia, Mich./Churchill/Oakland CC) and Nick Sears (Clio, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic Central) finished with day one with rounds of 79as the duo shares the 103rdposition with 12 other golfers in the field. Steve South (Westland, Mich./Franklin) rounded out the Madonna scoring with a 10-over 81.
"We got the opening round jitters out of the way, scoring conditions were very good in the morning round and Brett (Quitiquit) took advantage of them and made seven birdies," said head coach Steve Mato. "We started to settle into our game and expect to play well tomorrow."
Quitiquit caught fire on the back nine, with birdies on four of the last seven holes to get back under par after three straight bogies at holes nine, 10 and 11. For the round Quitiquit tallied seven birdies including a quadruple of birdies on par fours and a pair of birds on par threes.
As a team, Madonna is tied for 19th after the first round and is 13 strokes behind Oklahoma Christian University after OCU shot blistering 291 on day one.
Madonna returns to the course Wednesday, May 19for day two of the 2010 NAIA National Championships. The Crusaders tee times are set to begin at 12:45pm (CDT).
