KENTWOOD, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - Behind solid performances on the mound and timely base hits, the No. 18-ranked Madonna University baseball team completed a weekend sweep over Davenport University on Sunday (April 11). MU won game one 5-3 and took the night cap in shut out fashion 3-0 at East Kentwood High School.
Senior
Kyle Bolton (Burlington, Ont./Notre Dame/Indiana Tech) threw three and a third innings of relief, striking out four in picking up the game one win while sophomore
Tom Hansen (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) threw six plus innings in the night cap, striking out four to pick up the win.
Matt Kay (Canton, Mich./Canton/Henry Ford) posted three hits on the day while
Jeff Bultinck (Sterling Heights, Mich./Notre Dame Prep/Concordia),
Zach Flavin (Novi, Mich./Novi) and
Ted Toune (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center/Lansing CC) each had two hits with Flavin and Toune each hitting a homer in the opener.
MU started the scoring in the top of the first with Toune reaching on an error and moving to third on a failed pick off attempt.
Spencer Sarel (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) singled home Toune to make it 1-0 MU. Sarel came home two hitters later when Flavin hit a grounder to second that allowed Sarel to score and make it 2-0.
The MU lead grew to 4-0 in the third when Flavin connected on his sixth long ball of the season that scored Bultinck to push the Madonna cushion to 4-0.
Toune made it 5-0 in the fifth with his sixth homer of the year but DU answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning that trimmed the MU lead to 5-2.
Bolton allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh but got Dan Brown to go down swinging to end the game and move to 3-0 on the year.
Bolton came in to relieve starter
Robert Fraser (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) who went three and two thirds innings, striking out three while allowing just one hit in getting the no decision.
Game two was a pitchers' dual between Hansen and DU's Jarrett Luyk. MU scored a run in the top of the second with two outs as
Shawn Little (Canton, Mich./Canton) reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second and moving to third on a throwing error.
Brad Lineberry (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) laced a single to right center to plate Little and make it 1-0.
Hansen (2-1) worked himself out of in and out of trouble all afternoon but was helped out by a pair of double play balls before the Crusaders added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Little led off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Lineberry. Pinch hitter
Drew Fry (Madison Heights, Mich./Madison Heights) connected for a single to put runners at the corners for pinch hitter
Tarik Khasawneh (Canton, Mich./Canton). Khasawneh executed the suicide squeeze to perfection to score Little and make it 2-0. The lead grew to 3-0 when Toune doubled in Fry to put the Crusaders on top by three.
Hansen allowed a lead off single in the bottom of the inning before giving way to
Sam Haldane (St. Thomas, Ont./Elgin Central/Lake Land CC). Haldane got a double play ball from David Stuppy and got Jason Pierce to ground out to end the game for his first save of the season and a series sweep.
The Crusaders - who have played seven games in the last week and five in the last three days - are off until Friday (April 16) when they travel to Concordia for a 1pm WHAC double header.
