GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference office announced the 2010 Women's Basketball Awards late Thursday (Feb. 25) and four Crusaders were honored in a vote of the league's coaches.
Leading the way for MU was junior guard Tabatha Wydryck (Wyandotte, Mich.) was named to the All-WHAC first team, the all-defensive team and the Academic All-WHAC team. This marks the third straight season Wydryck has appeared on a WHAC honor team.
Wydryck led MU in scoring with a 10.9 point per game average, rebounding (8.1 rebounds per game), assists (3.9 assists per game) and steals (3.0 steals per game). In addition to leading the Crusaders, Wydryck is ranked in the top-30 nationally in defensive rebounds per game (No. 18/6.78), steals per game (No. 19/3.0) and total steals (No. 26/81) while ranking in the top-50 in the country in assists per game (No. 42/3.9), total assists (No. 48/105) and total blocks (No. 50/31).
Joining Wydryck on the all-academic team is senior Kim Olech (Canton, Mich.). To be selected, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior and have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average. Olech - making her second appearance on the team - is a criminal justice major while Wydryck is majoring in pre-medicine.
Freshman Shantelle Herring (Macomb, Mich.) was tabbed to the all-newcomer squad. Herring averaged 9.1 points per game while shooting over 33 percent from beyond the arc and handing out 59 assists and pulling in just under four rebounds per night.
Rounding out the award winners for the Crusaders was sophomore Katie Martin (Woodhaven, Mich.) who was selected to the Champions of Character team as the student-athlete who best displays the NAIA's five core values.
The Crusaders continue the 2010 WHAC Tournament by traveling to Grand Rapids and taking on the tournament's No. 2 seed, the Saints of Aquinas. Game time on Saturday (Feb. 27) is set for 12:30pm inside Ford Field House on the campus of Grand Rapids Community College.
