GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - -The Madonna University men's basketball team fell behind by double digits early and could not recover in a 103-62 loss at No. 13-ranked Cornerstone University on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 13) inside Mol Arena.
Senior Leroy Allen (Detroit, Mich.) and junior Geoff Gaylor (Roscommon, Mich.) led the way for MU with nine points each. Junior Bryant Slaughter (Westland, Mich.) scored four, but grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and handed out six assists in the loss to go along with a career-high seven points from freshman Dragan Bijelic (Shelby Township, Mich.) in just three minutes of action. Ronald Bates led Cornerstone with 14 points as six Golden Eagles reached double figures in the win.
After getting to with in one at 5-4 early the Crusaders went cold, seeing the host Golden Eagles go on an 18-0 run to go up by 19 at 23-4 with just under 10 minutes to go in the half.
Madonna was able to trim the deficit to 12 before half time but could not get any closer as Cornerstone put the game away in early in the second half and cruising to the 103-62 win.
The Crusaders begin the final week of the regular season on Wednesday night (Feb. 17), hosting Michigan-Dearborn in the second half of a men's and women's basketball double header. The MU and UMD women's teams kick the night off at 5:30pm with the men slated to follow at 7:30pm.
