BOX SCORE

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - -
A lay up from junior Tabatha Wydryck (Wyandotte, Mich.) with seven ticks left in overtime gave the Madonna University women's basketball team its first season sweep of Cornerstone University for the first time since joining the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference 13 years ago and gave the Crusaders a dramatic 60-59 overtime win on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 13) inside Mol Arena.

Junior Katie Mount (Waterford, Mich.) and senior Kim Olech (Canton, Mich.) led the Crusaders with 14 points each while Wydryck added six points to go along with five rebounds and a like number of assists. Melissa Veltkamp led all players with 20 points for the Golden Eagles in the loss.

Madonna built out an early 10-6 lead with just under eight minutes gone in the first half and held onto the lead, pushing the cushion out to as many as nine twice. A pair of late free throws by CU sent the two sides to the locker rooms with MU up 26-19 after 20 minutes.

The Crusaders opened the second half much like the first and built their lead back out to nine at 30-21 with 18:24 left on a score by Olech. The Golden Eagles answered back with a 9-0 run of their own to tie the game at 30-all with 16:03 left.

The two teams traded baskets and the lead back and forth over the next six minutes before back-to-back threes from Mount and sophomore Erin Bentley (Monroe, Mich.) put MU back on top by six at 40-34 with just over seven minutes to go.

Cornerstone turned the tables on Madonna, hitting back-to-back-to-back threes as part of another 9-0 run to retake the lead at 43-40 and 5:23 showing on the clock.

Wydryck answered back with a three to force the game's eighth tie, this time at 45-all before CU retook the lead at 50-46 with 1:56 left in regulation.

Mount pulled MU to with in two on a cutting score to the basket that made it 50-48 with 43 seconds left. On the Crusaders next possession Mount was fouled and sank the first free throw to make it 50-49 and after a Golden Eagle time out, made the second to tie the game for the ninth time, this time at 50-all and send the contest into overtime.

Freshman Shantelle Herring (Macomb, Mich.) scored the first five Crusader points in overtime, taking a pass from Wydryck and scoring off of the opening tap before nailing a three to put the Crusaders up by three at 55-52.

CU tied the game - the 11th of the affair - at 55-55 on a pair of Veltkamp free throws as part of a 7-0 run that put the Golden Eagles on top by four at 59-55 with 26 seconds left.

After time outs by both sides, sophomore Heather Goodwin (Temperance, Mich.) hit her first three pointer of the season to pull the Crusaders with in one at 59-58 with 17 seconds left. On the ensuing Cornerstone in-bounds attempt, the Golden Eagles were called for a five-second violation for failing to get the ball in-bounds and possession was given back to the Crusaders on their own baseline.

Herring found a streaking Wydryck who knocked down the shot in the paint to give the Crusaders a 60-59 lead with seven ticks left. CU was able to inbound the ball but Herring forced Veltkamp into a turnover, sealing the one-point win for Madonna and the first season sweep in 13 seasons.

The Crusaders begin the final week of the regular season on Wednesday night (Feb. 17), hosting Michigan-Dearborn in the first half of a men's and women's basketball double header. The MU and UMD women's teams kick the night off at 5:30pm with the men slated to follow at 7:30pm.
