LIVONIA, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - -The Madonna University men's basketball team put a scare into the No. 13-ranked Cornerstone University Golden Eagles but CU used an 18-10 run over the first nine minutes of the second half to take control of the game and leave the Activities Center with an 87-65 win on Wednesday night (Jan. 20).
Freshman Kevin Henry (Toledo, Ohio) set a new career-high with 27 points but was the only Crusader to reach double figures in the loss. Kelvin DeVries led CU with 22 markers.
The first half was a story of runs as MU started the trend, opening the game on a 7-2 run only to see CU come back to tie the game at eight-all and eventually went up by 11 at 19-8 as part of a 17-1 run over a five minute span.
The Crusaders then put together a 19-8 run to go back on top by on at 27-26 on a three from sophomore Josh Gay (Woodburn, Ind.) with 7:34 left in the first half. MU pushed its lead up to six at 34-28 with 5:26 to go on a jumper from Bryant Slaughter (Westland, Mich.),
Cornerstone was then able to the game at 34-all and ager the two sides traded buckets, DeVries hit a three with three seconds left to give the Golden Eagles a 39-36 lead at halftime.
CU's lead grew to eight early in the half before MU trimmed it down to just thanks to a triple from Henry that made it a 46-43 affair with 17:43 left. The Golden Eagles pushed the lead back up to eight and eventually 11 before another Henry make made it a nine point game (55-46) with just under 13 minutes left.
The Golden Eagles converted the next trip down the floor to go back up by double figures and never looked back, going up by as many as 24 in taking the 87-65 win.
MU looks to pick up its first WHAC win of the season on Saturday (Jan. 23) when the Royal Blue and Gold travels to Michigan-Dearborn for a 3:00pm tip.
