LIVONIA, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - -After leading by as many as eight points in the first half, the Madonna University women's basketball team went cold from the floor and the No. 1-ranked Davenport University Panthers used a 36-10 run over the first 12 minutes of the second half to take home a 79-68 win on Wednesday night (Jan. 13) inside the Activities Center.
Freshman
Shantelle Herring (Macomb, Mich.) led all players with a career-high 20 points and fellow freshman
Kaylee McGrath (Livonia, Mich.) added 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior
Tabatha Wydryck (Wyandotte, Mich.) pulled in 12 rebounds. Carrie Grubis led DU with 19 points in the win.
The two teams traded scores early in the first half with DU taking an early four point lead at 12-8 just over seven minutes in. From there MU went on a 14-3 run to go on top by six at 21-15 thanks to a three from sophomore
Stacey Szerlag (Brighton, Mich.) with 9:31 left.
The Madonna lead grew to eight three possessions later when McGrath knocked down a jumper in the lane to put MU on top 28-20. Davenport whittled its deficit down to just a single point at 31-30 on a Grubius three but a pair of free throws from sophomore
Erin Bentley (Monroe, Mich.) to go along with another McGrath score and a three from Herring - one of her four on the night - put the Crusaders back up seven (38-31) with 1:42 left.
DU closed the first half with a 7-2 run and trimmed the MU lead to just two at 40-38 heading into the intermission.
The DU run that started late in the first half continued into the opening minutes of the second half as the Panthers went on a 36-10 run over the first 12 minutes of the half to take control of the game. DU went up by as many as 24 before MU was able to climb back to with in nine points late but could not get any closer, falling 79-68 to the nation's top-ranked team.
MU shot 45 percent from beyond the arc in the first half (5-for-11) but only connected on one of its second half threes, registering a 0.07 percentage from long range.
The Crusader head back out on the road this Saturday (Jan. 16) when MU travels to Fort Wayne to take on Indiana Tech. Tip-off is set for 1pm inside the Schaffer Center.
