BOX SCORE

DETROIT, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The cold weather outside carried over to the Madonna University women's basketball team's shooting as the Crusaders connected at just a 28 percent clip from the floor in a 70-44 setback to NCAA Division II foe Wayne State University on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 29) inside the Matthaei Center on the WSU campus.

Freshman Kaylee McGrath (Livonia, Mich.) led MU with her second double-double of the season with a game-high 17 points and 13 rebounds. Fellow rookie Shantelle Herring (Macomb, Mich.) added nine points on four-of-eight shooting from the floor. Deanna Crumpton posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 boards to lead Wayne State.

McGrath scored MU's first eight points of the game but points seven and eight stopped a 10-0 Wayne State run that put the home side in front 16-8 with 14:21 to go in the opening half. Junior Katie Mount (Waterford, Mich.) started an 8-0 MU run with a triple and her three was followed by another from McGrath to trim the deficit to four at 18-14. A Herring lay in trimmed the WSU lead to just a pair (20-18) with 11:46 to go.

That was as close as the Crusaders got the remainder of the game as WSU went on a 17-5 run to close the half and take a 43-25 lead into the halftime intermission.

Coming out of the break MU was able to pull back to with in 13 (43-30) on a three from Erin Bentley (Monroe, Mich.) but WSU answered back in a big way, pushing its lead to 21 (51-30) on a lay up from Latosha Beasley. The Warriors kept their lead above 16 points the rest of the game, cruising to the 70-44 win.

After 11 games on the road to open the season the Crusaders will open close the 2009 calendar year with their first home game of the season on Wednesday (Dec. 30). Tip-off with Mercyhurst College is set for 3pm and the game can be heard on the Crusader Radio Network and MadonnaCrusaders.com.
