BOX SCORE
DAVENPORT, Iowa (MadonnCrusaders.com) - - The fourth 20-point game of the season from junior Tabatha Wydryck (Wyandotte, Mich.) led four Crusaders in double-figures as the Madonna University women's basketball team held off a feisty St. Mary of the Woods College squad in an 80-64 win on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 12) to close the St. Ambrose Classic inside Lee Lohman Arena.
Fellow junior Katie Mount (Waterford, Mich.) joined Wydryck in double-digits with a season-high 17 points while sophomore Erin Bentley (Monroe, Mich.) and freshman Kaylee McGrath (Livonia, Mich.) added 16 points and 12 points respectively. Chelsey Barron led the Pomeroys with 19 points.
The opening 20 minutes was tightly contested early with St. Mary of the Woods holding a slim edge. Madonna trailed the first 6:43 of the game until McGrath hit a lay up to give MU the lead at 17-16. The lead grew to five thanks to a triple from Wydryck and a Mount jumper to make it 25-20 MU with 11:05 showing on the clock.
The Crusaders saw their lead balloon up to nine on two separate occasions, the second coming on a jumper from sophomore Heather Goodwin (Temperance, Mich.) to make it 37-28. A Wydryck lay in with 6:25 left gave the Royal Blue and Gold a 10 point cushion but St. Mary whittled its deficit to just three with 4:31 to go. MU was able to stem the tide and increase its lead back to eight thanks to an old fashioned three point play from Mount and head into the locker room with a 48-40 half time lead.
St. Mary of the Woods came out of the break and trimmed the Madonna lead to just one over the first two-plus minutes (50-49) but a personal 4-0 run from Mount pushed the lead back to five before triples from Bentley and Mount wrapped around a McGrath jumper in the lane increased the MU lead back to double digits at 62-52 with 11:18 to go.
The Crusader lead grew to as many as 14 with 5:14 left after a lay up from freshman Shantelle Herring (Macomb, Mich.) but the Pomeroys were able to stay in the game, cutting the Crusader lead back down to six with 3:06 left.
Bentley sank a triple and then converted a pair of free throws to put the lead back into double digits at 75-64. A triple from freshman Heather Pratt (Flushing, Mich.) and another Wydryck jumper sealed up the 16 point win for Madonna 80-64.
The Crusaders take the next week off for final exams and return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 19, traveling to Cedarville to square off with the No. 12-ranked Yellow Jackets in a 2pm game.
