KANSAS CITY, Mo. - - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced its 2009 Volleyball All-American and All-American Scholar Athlete teams on Sunday (Dec. 6) and a pair of Madonna student-athletes - seniors
Inta Grinvalds (Portage, Mich./nursing) and
Mary McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./art and education) - were selected as both All-Americans and All-American Scholar Athletes.
To be selected as a Scholar Athlete, a student-athlete must be nominated by their head coach and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or better and be a junior or senior.
Grinvalds - making her second appearance on the Scholar Athlete squad - set the school record for career assists, passing Ashley Frost (2002-05) and establishing the new MU mark with 7,009 career assists. Grinvalds leads the nation and the WHAC in total assists (1,687) and assists per set (11.55). She was a four-time All-WHAC first team selection, making her just the second player in program history to earn a spot on the WHAC's top team joining Brandy Malewski (1997-00).
McGinnis - also making her second appearance on the Scholar Athlete team - leads the loop in total kills posting 528 this season while ranking first in kills per set with 3.7 terminations and ended the season eighth in hitting percentage with a .248 average. Her 1,633 career kills ranks her eighth all-time at MU in just three seasons.
MU finished the season 32-7 and appeared in the WHAC championship match.
