GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - Playing its final match of the season, the Madonna University men's soccer team downed Davenport 4-1 on Wednesday (Nov. 4) at the DU Turf Field.
The Crusaders end the season at 4-7-4 overall and 4-5-3 in WHAC play, missing out on a playoff berth due to a tie-breaker with the Panthers. DU claimed the fourth and final post season bid by virture of its Saturday win over Siena Heights and MU's tie at Concordia.
An even match early on, Madonna got on the board just before halftime when senior Eric Kiebert (Essex, Ont.) took a pass from freshman Jordan Hunt (Dearborn, Mich.) and beat the DU keeper to the right in the 45th minute.
MU made it 2-0 in the 59th minute when freshman Moses Otieno (Nairobi, Kenya) one-timed a shot after a pass from junior Jacob Rosiek (Oak Park, Mich.) for the two-goal lead.
The Panthers cut the MU lead in half after converting on a penalty kick in the 65th minute but the MU lead increased to a 3-1 cushion in the 69th minute when junior Mikey Iyoha (Benin, Nigeria) headed home a Rosiek corner kick for another two-goal lead.
MU senior Mark Pikula (Dearborn, Mich.) closed the scoring for the Crusaders in the 78th minute as Iyoha worked to get into the box and Pikula was in the right spot to finish off the pass for a 4-1 final.
Senior Steve Besk (Northville, Mich.) made four saves in picking up his fourth win of the season.
