ANN ARBOR, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The Madonna University women's soccer team got goals from six different players in a 7-0 win over Concordia on Saturday (Oct. 31) at Rummel Field in the regular season finale for both sides.
MU got on the board twice in the first half with senior
Jessica Austin (Livonia, Mich.) finishing off passes from fellow senior
Lia Melasi (Fenton, Mich.) and sophomore
Trisha Bender (Commerce, Mich.) to put MU on top 1-0. Goal two of the half came from another senior -
Lauren Hess (Livonia, Mich.) - in the 19th minute as she teamed with Melasi to finish off a shot that rolled in past the CU keeper for a 2-0 lead.
The two-goal lead held up into halftime and coming out of the break the Crusaders added five more goals for a 7-0 final. Goal three of the match came off the foot of Austin who finished a Hess pass for a three-goal lead.
The fourth MU goal came in the 65th minute when Melasi fed fellow senior
Rachel Thompson (Livonia, Mich.) for her first goal of the season. MU added goal five just over a minute later when senior
Kaila Moore (Howell, Mich.) took a pass from freshman
Jackie Vaquera (Highland, Mich.) and her shot found the back net for a 5-0 lead.
Goal six came from sophomore
Chelsea Shrewsbury (Milford, Mich.) who sent in a shot that bounced off of a Card defender before going in for the 6-0 lead in the 70th minute.
The final MU goal came in the 73rd minute when sophomore
Nicole Rodriguez (Woodhaven, Mich.) took control of a rebound of a free kick off the foot of sophomore
Diana Brda (Westland, Mich.) for the 7-0 final.
Sophomore
Chelsea Gregg (Livonia, Mich.) made three saves in earning the shutout.
The Crusaders now wait to learn their postseason fate as the result of Wednesday's Aquinas/Cornerstone match will determine what happens next for the Crusaders. An Aquinas win means that MU claims the fourth and final playoff spot but a tie or win by Cornerstone means that the Golden Eagles claim the final berth and the Crusaders' season will end.
