ADA, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The Madonna University men's golf team claimed its first ever Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship on Monday (Oct. 19) by just a single stroke over Cornerstone at Quail Ridge Golf Club.

MU posted a total stroke count of 2098 over the seven-event WHAC slate, besting CU by one (2099).

Junior Brett Quitiquit (Highland, Mich.) became MU' second ever WHAC medalist (Justin Goyt - 2005) after posting a 74.85 stroke average in WHAC play this fall.

MU led by 10 shots coming into the final jamboree of the season and needed all 10 of those shots as Cornerstone made a late surge to shoot a 308 to MU's 317 trimming the Madonna lead to just one shot.

Cornerstone won the final jamboree with Davenport in second and MU in third, but that result allowed the Crusaders to secure the WHAC's automatic bid to the National Championships.

Quitiquit was low man on the day for MU, tying for fourth with a 78. Senior Steve South (Westland, Mich.) carded a 79 to tie for eighth while juniors Tommy Lucko (Livonia, Mich.) and Jimmy Uelmen (Ferndale, Mich.) tied for 12th with rounds of 80.

Sophomore Nick Sears (Clio, Mich.) and senior Kyle Lawrey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) rounded out the MU contingent with rounds of 81 and 83 for a team total of 317.

The Crusaders earned the WHAC's automatic bid to the 2010 59th Annual NAIA Men's Golf National Championships which are slated for May 18 - 21 at TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
