Set one was all Marian as the Knights put up 17 kills to the Crusaders 10 while Madonna was guilty of five errors in seeing Marian take the opener 25-16.
It looked like MU would fall behind 2-0 in the match as Marian led most of the set. A Czarnecki kill pulled MU to with in four at 20-16. Back-to-back Fricke kills followed by another Czarnecki kill pulled MU to with in one at 20-19. After the sides traded points and MU trailed 22-20, senior Abby Long (LaPorte, Ind.) posted just the eighth kill of her career prior to a combo block from sophomore Karie Altman (Taylor, Mich.) and Grinvalds pulled MU even at 22-22. After Marian went up one on an Ashley Hanslits kill, Altman tied the set up again on a kill of her own before teaming with McGinnis for another block to send MU to set point at 24-23. McGinnis finished off the set on a winner from Grinvalds to pull MU even in the match at one set each.
Set three was all Madonna early as the Crusaders built out a 15-9 lead before seeing the Knights trim the deficit to two at 18-16. The two sides traded points until a Madonna miscue tied the set at 24-all. After a Fricke kill put MU on top 26-25 a Hanslits attack error gave MU the 27-25 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
With 10 ties, set four was the most back and forth of the match as the two sides traded the lead back and forth until Madonna took it for good at 18-17 on a Marian error. The Crusaders allowed the Knights just two more points while taking advantage of five Knight mistakes in taking the final set 25-19 and the match three sets to one.
With the perfect 4-0 weekend, the Crusaders claimed the tournament title, their third of the season. MU returns to the court on Tuesday (Oct. 13) to host Siena Heights in a 7pm match inside the Activities Center.
