WILMORE, Ky. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The No. 10-ranked Madonna University volleyball team got back to its winning ways on Friday afternoon (Oct. 9) behind 11 kills from Mary McGinnis (Fraser, Mich.) and 10 more from Katie Czarnecki (Chesterfield, Mich.) to sweep Montreat College 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-16) in the opening match of the Asbury Classic inside the Luce Center.
Set one was all Madonna from the start as the Crusaders built out an early 9-3 lead and forced the Cavs into a time out. MU was up 18-10 before three miscues allowed Montreat to pull with in six at 19-13. After a Madonna time out, the Crusaders responded with a 6-1 run being two service aces from junior Anna Gatt (Livonia, Mich.) along with a block and a kill from Kathleen Donehue (New Hudson, Mich.) gave MU a 25-14 win.
The second set was again all MU, seeing the Royal Blue and Gold connect at a .333 clip in taking the set 25-14. The Crusaders got another service ace from Gatt and two kills from Anastasija Seremetjeva (Riga, Latvia) down the stretch to roll to the nine point win.
Set three was the most lopsided of the match early on as MU built out a 12-1 lead behind three kills from Czarnecki and another from Seremetjeva to establish control early. The Crusaders went up 20-10 on yet another Czarnecki termination. The two sides then proceeded to trade points but the Crusaders were able to maintain the lead and used a Cav' mistake to end the match with a 25-16 set three win and 3-0 sweep.
Madonna wraps up play on day one of the Asbury College Classic with an 8pm match against Pikeville College.
