LIVONIA, Mich. - - A trio of second half goals including two from senior Jessica Austin (Livonia, Mich.) gave the Madonna University women's soccer team a 3-1 win over Cornerstone on Wednesday (Sept. 30) at Greemead Field.
While neither side found the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes, MU peppered CU keeper Julianne Bruining with 13 shots, including eight on frame.
Madonna wasted little time coming out of the break as Lia Melasi (Fenton, Mich.) carried the ball through the Cornerstone defense in the 49th minute and unleashed a shot from 25 yards out that beat Bruining to the upper left 90 for a 1-0 MU lead.
The lead grew to 2-0 less than two minutes later (50:11) when Austin was on the back end of a puint from Madonna keeper Chelsea Gregg (Livonia, Mich.) and beat two defenders and then Bruining high and to her right from 20 yards out.
CU trimmed the MU lead to just a goal in the 52nd minute when Jen Kuiper hammered home a lead pass from Ashleigh Lund and beat Gregg to her right to make it 2-1.
Austin iced the game away for Madonna in the 59th minute when she converted a penalty kick after Cornerstone was whistled for a foul inside of the penalty area to make it 3-1.
The Crusaders outshot the Golden Eagles 26-10 and held a 16-6 edge in shots on goal. Gregg had to make five saves in picking up her second straight win while Bruining had to make 13 stops.
Madonna wraps up its three-match home stand on Friday (Oct. 2) when Davenport comes to
Greenmead Field for a 4pm match.
