BOX SCORE

ADRIAN, Mich. - - Behind its second best hitting performance of the season, the No. 9-ranked Madonna University volleyball team swept Siena Heights 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-15) on Tuesday (Sept. 15) night in the SHU Field House.

Senior outside hitter Mary McGinnis (Fraser, Mich.) led MU with 11 kills while sophomore middle hitter Karie Altman (Taylor, Mich.) added seven terminations while sophomore outside hitter Katie Czarnecki (Chesterfield, Mich.) and freshman Kathleen Donehue (New Hudson, Mich.) chipped in with six and five kills respectively. Senior setter Inta Grinvalds (Portage, Mich.) handed out 33 assists while sophomore libero Amanda Koszela (Dearborn, Mich.) led the way with nine digs.

The Crusaders (12-1; 1-0 WHAC) connected at a .429 clip in the match, committing just seven errors in 77 swings. On the flip side the Saints (2-8; 0-1 WHAC) hit just .035 for the match.

MU opened set one on a 10-3 run behind kills from Altman, Grinvalds and McGInnis and forcing SHU into a time out. Coming out of the break the Crusader offense continued to click, pushing the lead to 10 at 19-9 after another McGinnis kill before closing the set on a 6-3 run for the 25-12 final and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set two of the night was much like the first with the Crusaders taking a 10-3 lead, this time on a Donehue kill, leading to a SHU time out. That trend continued as the lead grew to 23-9 on a McGinnis service ace before a Saint miscue and another Donehue kill gave MU a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-11 win.

The third and final set of the match was the tighest of the three as MU opened up an 11-5 lead early before an Anastasija Seremetjeva (Riga, Latvia) kill forced SHU to call a time out down 12-5. A McGinnis solo block gave MU a 20-14 lead and saw the Saints take another time out. That did little to stem the tide as a pair of kills from Czarnecki and McGinnis along with one from Seremetjeva sealed up the 25-15 win for MU and a sweep in the match.

MU returns to the court on Thursday (Sept. 17), hosting Concordia in a 7pm match inside the Activities Center.
