NORTHVILLE, Mich. - - The Madonna University women's cross country team opened the 2009 season with an impressive sixth place showing at the Detroit Titan Invite over a 3.1 mile course at Cass Benton Park.
 
MU - the top non-NCAA Division I team in the final standings - was led by All-WHAC selection Sarah Sherwood (Plymouth, Mich.) who placed eighth with a time of 19:14. Kari Saarela (Westland, Mich.)  ran a time of 21:04 to place 39th overall while Devan Walley (Livonia, Mich.) crossed the line in 21:18, good for 46th.
 
Cassie Yarnell (Clarkston, Mich.) came in 51st in a time of 21:35 and was followed by Emily Bambach (Livonia, Mich.) in 57th with a time of  21:59.
 
The Crusaders return to the course on Friday (Sept. 18) to take part in the National Cathlic Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
