The No. 9-ranked Madonna University volleyball team closed the 2009 Julie Martin Memorial Classic with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-14) win over the University of Windsor on Saturday (Sept. 12) inside the Activities Center.

MU saw three Crusaders reach double-digits in kills, led by a career best 12 from freshman Anastasija Seremetjeva (Riga, Latvia). Senior outside hitter Mary McGinnis (Fraser, Mich.) had 11 terminations while freshman Anastasija Baranovska (Riga, Latvia) posted a career best 10 kills. Senior setter Inta Grinvalds (Portage, Mich.) paced the offense with 42 assits while sophomore libero Amanda Koszela (Dearborn, Mich.) posted 10 digs.

Following the match Koszela and McGinnis were named to the all-tournament team.
MU led from wire-to-wire in set one, opening an early 11-4 lead following a Karie Altman (Taylor, Mich.) kill from Grinvalds. A combo block from Baranovska and Seremetjeva followed by a kill from Seremetjeva pushed the cushion to 19-9. After UW reached 10 points on a Jennifer Ellig kill, the Crusaders reeled off six straight points to close the set with the final four points coming from Seremetjeva and Baranovska.

Set two was the tightest of the match with nine ties and five lead changes. A Baranovska kill made it 22-16 MU and the Crusaders did not let the lead slip below five the rest of the set, getting a kill from Katie Czarnecki (Chesterfield, Mich.) to go along with two more from Seremetjeva in teh 25-19 win.

After opening the third and final set down 2-1, MU rallied to take the lead for good on a McGinnis kill to make it 3-2. The lead grew to 10-3 with McGinnis at the service line thanks to a kill from Seremetjeva and a pair of aces from McGinnis. The Crusaders increased their lead to 20-11 on back-to-back kills from Baranovska. Another Seremetjeva kill pushed the MU lead to 24-14 before a service ace from Seremetjeva ended the set at 25-14 and the match at 3-0 in favor of the Crusaders.

Madonna returns to the court on Tuesday to open league play in a 7pm match at Siena Heights.
