LIVONIA, MICH. - - The Madonna University Crusaders defeated the visiting Spring Arbor Cougars Saturday at Greenmead Field by a score of 2-1 in double overtime.

With less than three minutes to play in the second overtime, Madonna senior Jessica Austin (Livonia, Mich.) found the ball just left of the goal and 20 yards out. Austin turned to the middle and fired a shot that bent just over the reach of Spring Arbor keeper Flo Altar. The goal, Austin's second of the day, ended the game that appeared to be headed toward a 1-1 decision.

With the win Madonna improved to 2-4 on the season, Spring Arbor falls to 2-4-1.

Spring Arbor managed four shots on goal in the first 29 minutes of the game but the Cougars were unable to beat Madonna keeper Brittany Warner (Canton, Mich.) during the stretch. Madonna's first shot on goal found the back of the net as Rachel Thompson (Livonia, Mich.) found a streaking Austin to give Madonna a 1-0 lead at the 30 minute mark.

The Cougars responded early in the second half when they evened the score in the 61st minute of play.

From that point on both teams traded shots as they battled back and forth through the end of regulation and the first overtime.

Madonna outshot Spring Arbor 3-0 in the second overtime with the third and final shot coming off the foot of Austin for the game winner.

Crusader keeper Warner tailed 10 saves en-route to picking up the win.

Madonna returns to action Wednesday, September 16, when Aquinas travels to Livonia for the WHAC conference game.
