DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - - The No. 12-ranked Madonna University volleyball team wrapped up day one at the Embry-Riddle Labor Day Classic with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-6) sweep of Faulkner University inside the ICI Homes Center.
Sophomore middle hitter Karie Altman (Taylor, Mich.) posted 12 kills for the victorious Crusaders (6-0). Senior outside hitter Mary McGinnis (Fraser, Mich.) posted 11 kills after setting a career high in the day's first match. Junior outside hitter Liz Dempsey (Westland, Mich.) recorded nine kills and eight digs while senior setter Inta Grinvalds (Portage, Mich.) handed out 35 assists.
In set one, the Crusaders trailed just twice at 1-0 and 2-1 before taking the lead for good at 3-2 on a service ace from sophomore outside hitter Megan Fricke (Wyandotte, Mich.). MU pushed the lead to four at 10-6 and never let the lead slip below four the remainder of the set, winning 25-16.
Set two was again all MU as the Crusaders never trailed and opened up a 12 point lead at 22-10 on a service ace from sophomore libero Amanda Koszela (Dearborn, Mich.) before winning 25-13 to go up 2-0 in the match.
The final set of the day was the most lopsided of the trio as MU opened up a 10-2 lead early and cruised to the 25-6 win. The Crusaders hit at a .520 clip, committing just one attack error in 25 swings.
The Crusaders continue play at the ERAU Labor Day Classic on Saturday with a 3pm match against Lindsey Wilson and wrap up the weekend with a 7pm match against the host Eagles. Both matches can be heard live on the Crusader Radio Network with the new expanded pregame show starting 15 minutes prior to first serve.
