LIVONIA, Mich. - - Head women's basketball coach Carl Graves announced Friday (May 29) that he has signed Dakota High School standout Shantelle Herring (Macomb, Mich.) to a letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic careers at Madonna University starting this fall.
Herring is the fifth student-athlete to sign with MU, joining Kayleigh Burden (Romulus, Mich.), Kaylee McGrath (Livonia, Mich.), Kristie Porada (Rockwood, Mich.) and Heather Pratt (Flushing, Mich.) as part of the class of 2013.
"Shantelle Herring is a very important catch for our program," commented Graves after the signing. "We have been in contact with her since early in her junior year. She does so many wonderful things with a basketball that my staff and I are eager to see how she fits with the other players that are here. The potential is present athletically for some wonderful things to happen in the future. Coach McCune (Macomb Dakota) did a wonderful job with her over the past four years and helped immensely throughout the recruiting process. He showed genuine concern for her well being as a student-athlete and stressed what a wonderful person we were getting in Shantelle. Her father Dave has also been helpful and a big part of her prep career. Shantelle shared her signing with her family and teammates, this is important to us because it shows that she isn't selfish. It wasn't all about her. There will be other good student-athletes when she arrives on campus in the fall and it's important that she has this quality. Shantelle Herring is very talented! My staff and I couldn't be more pleased than to watch her don the Royal Blue and Gold at MU!"
Herring earned four letters in basketball along with two in track at Dakota. She finished her prepdays ranked 25th in Michigan High School history for career steals with 401. Herring set 11 school records and currently holds seven including single-game, single-season and career steals along with the career assist mark and the three point percentage record for a season and career. Herring was named to the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan's Class A all-state team along with being an All-Macomb County All-Star and an All-Macomb Area Conference first team selection after helping the Cougars to the state district title this past winter in her final prep season.
Herring joins a Crusader squad that advanced to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference semi-finals and graduates just two seniors from the 2009 club.
