PHOTOS: 1 | 2 | 3 | LIVONIA, Mich.–The second-seeded Madonna University women's soccer team scored three times and Julia Stewart (JR/St. Clair Shores, Mich.) tied the program shutout record with a 3-0 win over the seventh seed, Lourdes University, at the Madonna Athletics Complex in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference quarterfinals.
Madonna is now 4-0 all-time against the Gray Wolves and have yet to allow a goal to the Sylvania, Ohio program, outscoring them 13-0 in the four matches.
FINAL: #2 Madonna (13-3-2) 1, #7 Lourdes (8-8-2) 0
Lourdes got off the first good look of the game as KArlie O'Keefe got behind the defense and had a one-v-one look against Crusaders' keeper Julia Stewart from 10 yards out and Stewart was up to the challenge and kept the game scoreless.
Nine minutes later, at the 11:23 mark, Julia Henning (JR/Shelby Township, Mich.) intercepted a cross field pass by the Gray Wolves at the top of the 18-yard box and place the ball in the upper 90, far post, over the keeper's head for the 1-0 advantage.
Remy Houttekier gave MU a scare in the 43rd minute as she fired a shot from 35 yards out that sailed just over the crossbar. The Blue and Gold went to the half up 1-0.
It took just 2:57 for the Blue and Gold to extend their lead as Caitlyn Lefebvre (SR/Dearborn, Mich.) threw the ball to Monica Brydges (SR/Windsor, Ontario) who headed it on to Nicolette Vultaggio (SO/Chesterfield, Mich.) who possessed the ball for 30 yards and knocked the ball off the keeper, near post, for the 3-0 advantage.
In the 51st minute, the Gray Wolves had a shot in the crossbar and in the 56th minutes Madonna got on the board again and it was Henning and Vultaggio doing the damage. Vultaggio got the ball out wide to Henning who dribbled to the end line and then sent a cross into the box where Vultaggio was waiting to head the ball from six yards out for the three goal lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Crusaders possessed the ball for the majority of the match and outshot the Gray Wolves 12-4 in the contest which includes a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Vultaggio tallied three shots, all on frame, and scored twice to give her 24 on the season while Henning led the team with six shots, two on goal, with a goal scored and an assist.
Cristina Moraccini (SO/Macomb, Mich.) put two of her four shots on frame while Alexis Bozinovski (JR/Macomb, Mich.), Allie May (SR/Brownstown, Mich.) and Marissa Parisek (FR/Macomb, Mich.) each had two shots.
Stewart tied the school record for shutouts with her 11th of the season as she stopped the only two shots on goal she faced.
Stewart tied the program record with her 11th shutout of the season set by Jennifer Barker in 2000 (11.5) and 2001 (11).
Madonna is three shutouts shy of the team single-season record of 14 set in 2000.
Vultaggio's 54 points (24 goal, 6 assists) this season are third most in program history behind Sarah Peck's 73 (32g, 9a) in 2003 and 63 (29g, 5a) in 2002.
Vultaggio's 24 goals is the third most in a single season behind Sarah Peck's 32 in 2003 and 29 in 2002.
