SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Madonna University men's soccer team got an early second half tally from Ludvick Asigo (JR/Rongo, Kenya) and the defense made it hold up as the Crusaders recorded their fifth clean sheet of the season with a 1-0 win over Lourdes University at Wildcat Stadium on Wednesday night.

FINAL: Madonna (7-1-1, 2-0-1 WHAC) 1, Lourdes (4-3-1, 2-1 WHAC) 0

  • Both teams had ample opportunity to score in the opening 45, but neither could capitalize on their chances. The Crusaders ended the first half with three shots and two corner kicks and they carried that momentum into the second half.

  • The Crusaders opened the final 45 with two shots in the opening three minutes and after a Joe Smith (JR/Royal Oak, Mich.) save, converted on a counter as Yuri Farkas (SO/Sao Paulo, Brazil) found  Asigo who crossed the ball in from the right and snuck it in the far post for what proved to be the game winner.

  • The Blue and Gold buckled down in the second half and allowed just two shots by the Gray Wolves to put the game away.

  • Madonna outshot Lourdes 15-7 in the match and had a 7-5 edge in shots on goal while the Gray Wolves attempted five corner kicks to two for MU.

  • Farkas paced the offense with four shots with one on frame while Strahinja Ljubevic (SR/Belgrade, Serbia), Hector Morales (SR/Habana, Cuba) and Asigo each added two shots.

  • Six different players had a shot on goal in the contest led by Morales' two while Asigo was the lone to find the net.

  • Smith continued his strong season in goal for the Crusaders as he stopped all five shots he saw.

  • "Lourdes was tough, they played with very good pace and had their share of chances. I'm proud of our guys, it was a good team effort and our quality of play was impressive tonight. We struggled in front of goal a bit, but kept pushing for the next opportunity. Our mentality and commitment were terrific tonight." - Head Coach Mark Zathey on the win.

  • On Yuri's goal - "Yuri's assist to Ludvick was class and Ludvick did well to finish. Ludvick deserves more and his work ethic is impressive. He has been a bit frustrated with his form in front of goal to finish, I credit him for his persistence. It paid off today."

  • Madonna continues its three-game road trip on Saturday, Oct. 7 as they head to Grand Rapids, Michigan to square off with Aquinas College with kickoff set for 3 p.m. Live coverage of the game will be available via the AQ Sports Network at madonnacrusaders.com/live.
