GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Madonna University baseball team scored 19 runs on 23 hits and the pitching staff held Cornerstone University to a .225 average with a 3.00 earned run average as the Crusaders moved to 6-0 with a doubleheader sweep over the Golden Eagles at DeWitt Field on Saturday, 10-4 and 9-4.

GAME 1: Madonna (5-0, 5-0 WHAC) 10, Cornerstone (3-3, 2-3 WHAC) 4

  • Game one was a pitcher's duel early as the starters allowed just four baserunners through 4.1 innings before the home team broke through in the fourth.

  • A leadoff single and failed pickoff attempted proceeded back-to-back singles to put CU in front, 1-0. It could've been more, but Crusaders' lefty, Jack Ferguson (JR/Livonia, Mich.), induced a double play to end the frame.

  • Neither offense could gain traction until the seventh when the Blue and Gold broke the game open with five runs on five hits and two Golden Eagle errors.

  • Jalen Thomas (JR/Southfield, Mich.) and Jared Hagan (SR/Dearborn Heights, Mich.) got the inning started with back-to-back singles to begin the frame and a CU error on Mitch Hudvagner (SR/Cottam, Ontario)'s ground ball to the pitcher tied the game. William Da Costa (SO/Toronto, Ontario) followed with a pinch hit, two-run double and then consecutive two-out RBI base hits from Noah Renaud (SO/River Canard, Ontario) and Jerad Dokey (SO/Howell, Mich.) made it 5-1 MU.

  • An RBI triple in the bottom of the frame cut the lead to three, but the MU offense was not done as they added two more runs in the eighth.

  • It was Thomas who got things started again as he led off with a walk, Hagan singled and Nicholson plated Thomas with a base hit. A double steal put two runners in scoring position and Aram Shahrigian (FR/Northville, Mich.) brought in the team's seventh run with a fielder's choice.

  • A hit by pitch, an error and a two-out, two-run double for the Golden Eagles again cut the deficit to three, 7-4. A walk ended the day for John Bueckeleare (SO/Dearborn, Mich.) and Cliff Landess (SR/Carleton, Mich. ) came on and shut the door for his first save of 2017.

  • Thomas, Hagan and Nicholson were at it again in the ninth as all three singled while Nicholson plated Thomas. Shahrigian loaded the bases with a hit by pitch and Matt Deneau (SR/Amherstburg, Ontario) drew an RBI walk. The game's final run came off the bat of Michael Bentley (SO/Fraser, Mich.) as he plated the 10th run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

GAME 2: Madonna (6-0, 6-0 WHAC) 9, Cornerstone (3-4, 2-4 WHAC) 4

  • In the second game, the Crusaders again waited until the ninth inning to put the game away.

  • For the second straight game the Golden Eagles scored first on a two-out, two-run double for a 2-0 lead in the second.

  • In the middle innings, the Crusaders score a run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-2 lead.

  • In the fourth, Hudvagner followed a double play with an RBI double to left to score Jimmy White (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio). A White sac fly in the fifth plated Brett Sandora (FR/Fraser, Mich.) to tie the score at two and then in the sixth, Deneau drove in Sandora with a base hit to center for the 3-2 lead.

  • It was a short-lived lead as the home team used a double and a two-out single to tie the game at 3.

  • It was an eventful ninth inning as the Crusaders plated six runs on four hits and two errors before the Golden Eagles made things interesting in the bottom half.

  • Hagan led off with a single, a walk and a Nicholson bunt, coupled with a throwing error put MU in front 5-3. Two more bunts, the second by Adrian Reed (SO/Westland, Mich.), plated another run and Renaud cleared the bases with a two-run triple to increase the lead to five, 8-3. A Cole Rize (JR/Dexter, Mich.) RBI groundout completed the scoring for the 9-3 advantage.

  • It was an eventful bottom of the frame as the Golden Eagles scored on a bases loaded, two-out base hit, which led to Cliff Landess being called in for the second time on the day and he earned his second save with a fly out to end the game and keep the Blue and Gold unbeaten.

  • Game One

    • Hagan paced the offense as he finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Thomas and Nicholson each recorded two hits with the former scoring three times while the latter scored twice and drove in a pair.

    • Four other Crusaders recorded base hits as MU pounded out 11 hits in the contest and had nine RBIs with seven walks and 12 strikeouts.

    • Ferguson earned the win as he allowed two runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts.

    • Bueckeleare allowed two unearned runs on one hit, a walk and two K's while Landess earned the save with 1.1 perfect frames with two strikeouts.

  • Game Two

    • Hudvagner paced MU with three hits while Hagan and Deneau each recorded two hits and five other players recorded a hit as the Crusaders tallied 12 in the contest.

    • Renaud had a team-high two RBIs as MU tallied seven in the game while Sandora scored twice as Deneau's courtesy runner to pace the team.

    • Madonna walked and struck out nine times while the trio of pitchers allowed five walks and struck out nine.

    • Todd Jones (SR/Monroe, Mich.) got a no decision as he allowed three runs on four hits over six innings with three walks and five strikeouts while Donovan Thacker (SO/Southgate, Mich.) earned his first win in a Crusaders uniform as he allowed one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

    • Landess earned his second save of the season as he recorded the final out of the contest to seal the win.

  • The Crusaders wrap up the fall season on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7-8 as Aquinas College comes to Ilitch Ballpark for a 3-game series. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 12 p.m. with first pitch for Sunday's single nine-inning contest set for 1 p.m.
