RESULTS | FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Playing two rounds on a course you've never played can be tough, however, playing two rounds of one tournament on two separate courses is even tougher and that's exactly what the Madonna University women's golf team did this weekend at the USF Cougar Fall Invitational.
The Crusaders opened the tournament at Cherry Hill Golf Club and carded a 338 led by Karen Zambrano (JR/Madrid, Colombia)'s 79 at the par 72, 5,844-yard course. Kristen Szabelski (FR/Livonia, Mich.) fired an 85 while Kayla Gerhardt (FR/Flushing, Mich.) added an 86 and McKenzie Chaisson (FR/Oxford, Mich.) carded an 88 to complete the scoring. Madonna was eighth after day one.
However, round two was played at Cobblestone Golf Club and it wasn't kind to MU as the Crusaders carded a 335 in the final 18 to finish tied for ninth with a 673.
Gerhardt paced the Blue and Gold in the events second round as she posted the team's lowest single round score with a 77 to finish tied for 24th with a 163 (86-77). Her second round score and event total are both season-bests for the freshman. Zambrano posted an 83 on day two for a two-day 162 (79-83) and tied for 19th. Kelsey Edwards (JR/Ortonville, Mich.) turned in the third lowest score on the day as she carded an 86 and finished tied for 67th with a 185 (99-86). The fourth counting score on day two belonged to Chaisson who carded an 89 for a 36-hole 177 (88-89), tied for 59th. Szabelski posted a second round 94 to finish tied for 62nd with a 179 (85-94).
Madonna also had five individuals compete in the event led by Madison Maurier (FR/Livonia, Mich.) who tied Edwards with a 185 (97-88). Paige Clauss (FR/Bay City, Mich.) (94-99) and Jacquelyn Green (FR/Livonia, Mich.) (95-98) each finished with 193 which is a career-best for Green thanks to a season-low round of 95 in round one. Madison Montgomery (FR/Byron, Mich.) finished with a 212 (100-112) while Hannah Folkmier (FR/Highland, Mich.) carded a season-low 107 in round two for a season-best tournament score of 222 (115-107).
University of Northwestern Ohio won the event with a team score of 603 (304-299) and were led by individual medalist Brianna Baird who finished with a one-over par 145 (73-72). The host Cougars of St. Francis (Ind.) and Taylor (Ind.) tied with identical scores of 636 (319-317) while Indiana Wesleyan (326-319=645) and Bethel (Ind.) (333-314=647) rounded out the top five.
The Crusaders return to the links on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6-7 for the first of three Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Jamborees. Madonna hosts the event at Golden Fox Golf Club in Plymouth, Mich. with round one action set to begin with tee times at 11 a.m. while round two will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
