LIVONIA, Mich. – Taylor Turner (JR/Northville, Mich.) continued his early season success and the offense showed that the opening weekend outburst was no fluke as the Madonna University baseball team plated nine runs on seven hits en route to a 9-2 thumping of Cornerstone University at DeWitt Field on Friday night. The two teams will complete their three-game Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference fall series on Saturday.

FINAL: Madonna (4-0, 4-0 WHAC) 9, Cornerstone (3-2, 2-2 WHAC) 2

  • The Crusaders scored early and often in their second WHAC series of the season, putting up at least one run in six of the nine innings

  • Noah Renaud (SO/River Canard, Ontario) got the game started with a walk, moved to third on a Jerad Dokey (SO/Howell, Mich.) single and scored on Jared Hagan (SR/Dearborn Heights, Mich.)'s bases loaded infield hit. A Mitch Hudvagner (SR/Cottam, Ontario) sacrifice fly plated Dokey and staked Turner to a 2-0 lead.

  • In the second, MU gave their right-hander all the run support he needed as Matt Deneau (SR/Amherstburg, Ontario) drew a leadoff walk, Danny Blade (SO/Wyandotte, Mich.) ran for him and promptly stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on another ground ball to the second basemen for the three-run advantage.

  • Turner, who scattered eight hits over his eight innings of work, ran into trouble in the third as a single and two doubles plated two runs to cut the lead to one, but the offense had more to come.

  • Adrian Reed (SO/Westland, Mich.) singled home Hudvagner, who singled to lead off the fourth, to get one run back, then the Crusaders added a three spot in the fifth to put the game away.

  • Dokey led off with a walk, the fourth time MU had the leadoff runner reach in five frames, and scored on Jalen Thomas (JR/Southfield, Mich.)' triple. Hagan was hit by a pitch, stole second and Thomas scored on the catcher's throwing error, then Hagan scored on another throwing error after he and Hudvagner converted a double steal.

  • Deneau singled again in the eighth and his courtesy runner, Blade, stole a base and scored on a wild pitch.

  • The final run came in the ninth as Dokey led off with yet another walk, moved to second and third on wild pitches then scored on Thomas' RBI double for the 9-2 margin.

  • Turner was phenomenal again as he improved to 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA as he allowed two runs on eight hits over eight innings with five strikeouts. Cliff Landess (SR/Carleton, Mich. ) tossed a perfect ninth with a pair of Ks to end the game.

  • Thomas led the team with a pair of hits, drove in two and scored once, while Dokey scored three times as he finished 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.

  • Four other Crusaders picked up a hit as MU tallied seven in the contest to go with seven walks and five strikeouts.

  • Madonna finished with two extra base hits and five stolen bases.

  • "For our first road trip of the season, I thought our guys came out playing hard. We did the little things right tonight and that may have been the difference. Taylor Turner was outstanding tonight and gave us a chance to win. Cornerstone is a good team and we have areas we need to continue to improve on, but this was a solid win." - Head Coach Ted Falkner

  • The Crusaders and Golden Eagles wrap up their series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.
