LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna University baseball team has stated its goal this fall is to be competitive in every game after a self-described disappointing 5-3 record last year and they are off to a flying start with a three-game series sweep of Siena Heights which was capped with a 14-4 victory in seven innings on Sunday at Ilitch Ballpark.

GAME 1: Madonna (3-0, 3-0 WHAC) 14, Siena Heights (1-5, 0-3 WHAC) 4 (7 Innings)

  • It was an inopportune start for the Crusaders as Siena Heights opened the scoring in the first inning as a leadoff single, then back-to-back two-out hits, one being a triple, scored two runs.

  • Madonna backed starter Todd Jones (SR/Monroe, Mich.) in the second with three runs on four hits, highlighted by Aram Sherigian (FR/Northville, Mich.)'s two-run triple to right-center which scored Mitch Hudvagner (SR/Cottam, Ontario) and Jared Hagan (SR/Dearborn Heights, Mich.). Sherigian scored one batter later on Matt Deneau (SR/Amherstburg, Ontario)'s base hit for the 3-2 lead.

  • Three singles scored another Saints run in the third to tie the score, but it was a short lived tie as MU added four runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the frame for a lead they didn't relinquish.

  • With two outs in the third, Hagan doubled, Hudvagner walked and Sherigian reached on an error at second to score Hagan, then Deneau made the error really hit with a three-run homerun to left center for the 7-3 lead.

  • A passed ball in the fourth allowed Jerad Dokey (SO/Howell, Mich.), who singled, stole a base and moved to third on a Jalen Thomas (JR/Southfield, Mich.) fly out, to score for a five-run advantage.

  • Cliff Landess (SR/Carleton, Mich. ) relieved Jones after a one-out walk in the fifth and shut down a Saints rally before Adrian Reed (SO/Westland, Mich.) singled home Alex Nicholson (SO/Canton, Mich.), who pinch ran for Hudvagner who had reached on a walk, and stole a base, to make it 9-3.

  • Two singles and a stolen base cut the lead to five in the sixth, but the offense went right back to work with three runs of their own.

  • Thomas singled and Dokey was gunned down at home, but a stolen base put Thomas in scoring position and Hagan singled him home before Nicholson delivered MU's fourth home run of the series over the right field fence for a 12-4 lead.

  • Four more hits in the seventh gave MU 16 for the game and a pair of runs ended the game early for the third consecutive game.

  • With a man on and two out, three straight singles by Jimmy White (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio), Thomas and Hagan led to a pair of runs and a mercy-rule victory.

  • Madonna scored 14 runs on 16 hits with 12 RBI, four walks and just two strikeouts

  • Jones earned his first win of the season as he allowed just three runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings with a walk and two strikeouts

  • Landess was good in his first relief appearance of the season as he allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts in his 2.2 innings

  • Hagan finished the day 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two driven in while Deneau went 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI

  • Two other Crusaders registered two hits and four others recorded an RBI while nine different players scored a run

  • MU recorded four extra base hits in the contest with one double, one triple and a pair of home runs

  • "Our guys did everything we asked to prepare themselves for the heat this weekend. Siena Heights put up a couple of early runs, but we fought back and kept the pressure on them. Overall our team is still gelling and I'm looking forward to this next week of preparation for Cornerstone. We have some work to do, but things are moving in the right direction."

  • The Crusaders hit the road for their second WHAC series of the fall as they travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan to face Cornerstone University. The first game of the series, a single nine-inning contest, is slated for Friday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. with a doubleheader schedule for Saturday, Sept. 30 with first pitch at 1 p.m.
