LIVONIA, Mich. –The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference head coaches voted on the 2017-18 Preseason Baseball Coaches' Poll and the Madonna University baseball team, led by second year head coach Ted Falkner, was picked to finish fourth this spring.
Madonna finished the 2016-17 campaign in fifth with a conference record of 21-10 while going 31-19 overall. The Crusaders garnered 89 total points, but have their sights set on returning to the top of the WHAC.
The Crusaders lost several key members of last year's team that fell to Davenport in the WHAC semifinals, which includes NAIA All-American Honorable Mention Taylor Grzelakowski who was named WHAC Player of the Year and went on to sign a contract with the Minnesota Twins.
Falkner is excited about his first recruiting class and the fans will get their first look at the new Crusaders on Saturday, Sept. 23 as Madonna opens the fall conference slate with a doubleheader against Siena Heights at Ilitch Ballpark beginning at 12 p.m. The teams wrap up the series with a single contest on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. All three games will be nine innings and can be streamed live via the Madonna Athletics Network at madonnacrusaders.com/live.
Reigning WHAC champion, UNOH, tops the poll with 121 points and all 11 first-place votes with Indiana Tech second with 108 points followed by Concordia (100 points) to round out the top three.
