PHOTOS | LIVONIA, Mich. – After taking the first two sets, it looked as though the 22nd-ranked Madonna University volleyball team was well on its way to another sweep, but Lawrence Tech had other plans and forced a decisive fifth set which, with a raucous crowd at their back, the Crusaders were able to win 15-8 for a 3-2 victory at the Activities Center on Wednesday night.

MATCH 1: No. 22 Madonna (13-2, 2-0 WHAC) 3, Lawrence Tech (8-6, 1-1 WHAC) 1 (25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 18-25, 15-8)

  • It was all Crusaders early in set one, but the Blue Devils climbed back into the match and led late until an attack error, a pair of block assists by Jodie Kelly (FR/Romeo, Mich.), Taylor Suurmeyer (JR/Northville, Mich.) and Amanda Hawkins (SR/Livonia, Mich.) as well as a kill from Suurmeyer gave MU four of the final five points for a 1-0 lead

  • Madonna didn't relax in set two and led from start to finish. The key moment in the set came with MU up 11-9 as Lauren Korth (JR/Romeo, Mich.) served six straight points, which included an ace, a pair of Karlie Kelly (SR/Romeo, Mich.) kills and a Suurmeyer termination

  • The Blue Devils came out of the game break on fire as they led for all but three points in set three and never trailed after they took a 6-5 lead in set four

  • The Crusaders were able to regroup and built an early four point lead in set five on a pair of K. Kelly kills and a Suurmeyer kill

  • LTU cut the lead to three, 11-7, bit a pair of Hawkins kills sandwiched a Casey Looper (JR/Battle Creek, Mich.) ace and an LTU attack error to seal the win

COACHES CORNER

  • "This place was electric tonight, the crowd was awesome," said Crusaders Head Coach Jerry Abraham. "We played well tonight, but something happened during that 10-minute break, I'm not sure what, but give LTU credit they played well and they played fast. When we stopped attacking and slowed things down they made some great transitions. I give our girls credit they fought hard and came back to get the win, really proud of our performance."

MILESTONE WATCH

  • Hawkins is 82 kills away from 1,000 for her career with 918
