LIVONIA, Mich. – The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners on Monday for performances the week of Sept. 4-10 and Madonna University's Tony Floyd (SO/Westland, Mich.) was named WHAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week while Julia Stewart (JR/St. Clair Shores, Mich.) was named WHAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Floyd, the cross country programs only All-American, was the top NAIA finisher at the Calvin Knight Invitational on Saturday as he finished a full minute better than his time at the same event a year ago. He finished the 8-kilometer race in 25:09 which was good enough for third overall in the 253-runner field and helped lead the Crusaders to a third place finish where they bested NAIA No. 5 Cornerstone University as well as two other WHAC programs who received votes in the most recent coaches poll.
Stewart has been phenomenal in goal this season as she has allowed just two goals in five games which includes a pair of shutouts this past week. Stewart directed a backline that allowed just five shots in a pair of 5-0 wins on the week. The senior keeper is currently in the midst of 274 minutes without a goal allowed after a third straight shutout on Monday night.
This is Floyd's fourth Runner of the Week honor and second in cross country while Stewart captured her third Defensive Player of the Week award.
As conference winners, both Floyd and Stewart are eligible for the NAIA National Player of the Week for their respective sports which will be released later this week.
