SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Madonna University men's soccer team headed into a hostile environment at the Cougar Soccer Complex with an injury depleted squad and suffered their first loss of 2017, a 3-1 defeat to Spring Arbor University on Monday night.

  • The Crusaders attempted seven shots in the opening 45 minutes with two on frame and had the only corner kick in the period but could not convert

  • Playing in front of a raucous crowd for the Cougars home opener, the home team got on the board first as they scored just 58 seconds before halftime, the first goal allowed by Crusaders' keeper Joe Smith (JR/Royal Oak, Mich.) this season

  • It didn't take long for MU to get the equalizer as Hector Morales (SR/Habana, Cuba) converted his second penalty kick this season in the 56th minute and makes the Crusaders 3-for-3 on PK's in 2017

  • Five minutes later the Cougars went back ahead and added the final tally in the 87th minute to send MU to their first loss of 2017

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Madonna posted 14 shots with six on goal while the home team recorded 15 shots with eight on frame

  • Morales paced MU with five shots with four on frame and the lone tally

  • Peter Marwa (SR/Nairobi, Kenya) and Gian Marco Bevitori (FR/Ravenna, Italy) had the other shots on goal

  • Smith suffered his first loss in goal as he made five saves in 90 minutes
