Record falls as @MUCrusadersXCTF women place 3rd at Knight Invite

RESULTS | GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Freshman Kathleen George (FR/Westland, Mich.) showed why Head Coach Patrick Daugherty has been so excited for the 2017 season to begin as she set broke the freshman record to help lead the 25th-ranked Madonna University women's cross country team to a third place finish at the Calvin Knight Invitational on Saturday.

George finished the 5-kilometer Gainey Athletic Complex course in 18:13.4 to finish sixth overall and earn six team points for the Crusaders. She was the third fastest NAIA finisher in the event. The next three Crusaders finished within 12 seconds of one another to help MU to a tight 1:03 1-5 split.

Alison Shapic (SO/Madison Heights, Mich.) was the second MU runner to finish as she crossed the line in 18:38.2 to finish 17th and earn 15 points. Christina Murphy (FR/Livonia, Mich.) crossed seven seconds later in 18:45.5 to finish 20th while MacKenzie Gurne was fourth across for MU in 18:50.0. Jessica Reagle (JR/Homer, Mich.) completed the team scoring as she finished 36th with a time of 19:16.1.

NCAA Division II Grand Valley State University won the event with 63 points with Aquinas finishing second with 68 points. Madonna placed third with 90 points while Calvin (104) and Siena Heights (122) rounded out the top five.

The Crusaders return to action on Friday, Sept. 15 at Forest Akers East Golf Course in Lansing, Michigan for the Spartan Invite hosted by Michigan State University.
