LIMA, Ohio – The newly minted 22nd-ranked Madonna University volleyball team made quick work of its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match of the season as the Crusaders dispatched the Racers in three sets in less than 90 minutes at Racers Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

MATCH 1: No. 22 Madonna (10-2, 1-0 WHAC) 3, UNOH (10-5, 0-1 WHAC) 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-18)

  • Madonna trailed early in set one until an Amanda Hawkins (SR/Livonia, Mich.) kill tied the score at 14 and three consecutive Racers attack errors put MU in front 17-14

  • A Karlie Kelly (SR/Romeo, Mich.) kill followed by a pair of Lauren Korth (JR/Romeo, Mich.) service aces capped a 6-1 MU run and put the Crusaders ahead 20-15 and they never looked back

  • Set two was much of the same as UNOH hung around early, but a pair of mistakes sandwiched a Nicole Oestrike (SR/New Boston, Mich.) kill to break a 6-6 tie and helped MU win seven of the next nine points en route to a 25-16 rout

  • The Blue and Gold rushed out to a 5-1 lead in the third set and never locked back as they led by as many as nine points on the way to a lopsided sweep

  • Madonna held UNOH to .111 hitting, despite the Racers collecting 35 kills to the Crusaders 33

  • Nine of MU's points came via an ace with seven others coming from the block as UNOH committed 23 hitting errors

  • Oestrike paced MU with 13 kills and 11 digs

  • Kelly finished with 10 kills and 10 digs while Hawkins added seven kills and a team-best four blocks

  • Korth finished with 30 assists, three aces, three block assists and two digs

  • Stephanie Hanewold led UNOH with 15 kills and a .385 attack percentage

  • "We played great tonight. UNOH came in hot, they've got good size and the gym was packed. I was really proud of the way the ladies handled themselves tonight, we were firing on all cylinders and maintained constant pressure all game, keeping them out of system for much of the match." - Head Coach Jerry Abraham

  • On the players: "Lauren set an excellent game, Kalie was on fire and Amanda and Taylor really controlled the middle all night. Our libero, Alyssa, played excellent and passed really well tonight. It was a great effort."

  • Hawkins is 126 kills away from 1,000 for her career with 874
