LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna University men's soccer team has been picked third in the preseason coaches' poll as announced by the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference office this week. Head coach Mark Zathey's squad tied with Cornerstone for the spot behind defending champion Northwestern Ohio and Indiana Tech. MU opens their campaign on August 25 against Goshen College at the Madonna Athletics Complex.
UNOH is primed to repeat as the WHAC men's soccer champion. The head coaches in the league selected the Racers as the preseason favorite with 143 points and 11 first-place votes. Indiana Tech received the last first-place vote and is picked second with 125 points.
Madonna and Cornerstone are tied for third with 110 points each. Madonna (1997, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008) is tied with Aquinas (1992, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010) for the most WHAC crowns with 8 each and will look to add another in 2017.
The Crusaders hope to continue a tradition of excellence in 2017 behind 2016 WHAC Newcomer of the Year Yuri Farkas (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and first team All-Conference defender Billy Werthman (SR/Livonia, Mich.). The duo helped Madonna finish 13-5-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the WHAC, opening the season with eight straight wins.
Zathey and his team will play 17 regular season matches with eight of those at home and nine on the road. The schedule is highlighted by a homecoming contest against Cornerstone on Sept. 29.
The preseason poll was based on votes from all head coaches in the conference.
