TOURNAMENT WEBPAGE | LIVONIA, Mich. – With the conclusion of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, the conference office officially announced the seeding for the 2017 WHAC Baseball Tournament co-hosted by the University of Northwestern Ohio and Lourdes University.
The Madonna University baseball team earned the five seed in this year's event and will square off against second-seeded Davenport University on Sunday, May 5 at 3:30 p.m. The game is at UNOH's Racers Field at St. Rita's Sports Complex in Lima, Ohio.
The Blue and Gold took the season series from the Panthers, sweeping the doubleheader on Sunday, Apr. 2 at Illitch Ballpark. Since 2009 Madonna is 22-10 against Davenport with a 2-2 record in the WHAC tournament and a1-2 record on neutral ground.
This season the Crusaders have outscored DU 23-15 and have a 213-127 scoring margin since 2009.
In game one this season, DU won 5-3 before the Crusaders took game two 11-7 and the rubber match 9-3. Madonna outhit Davenport .314 to .313 in the series with the MU team ERA at 5.00 while Davenport had a 7.56 ERA.
Taylor Grzelakowski (SR/Fraser, Mich.), who is leading the Crusaders in several offensive categories, hit .538 in the three games with seven hits in 13 at bats, two doubles a home run, five runs scored and five RBI. He slugged .932 in the series and had a .571 on-base percentage.
Jalen Thomas (SO/Southfield, Mich.) also had a big series as the Crusaders left fielder hit .500 (7-for-14) with two doubles, a triple and a home run. He scored four times and drove in six with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage.
Taylor Turner (JR/Northville, Mich.), who was 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA in 7.2 innings pitched had the best series on the mound for MU. He allowed three runs on 13 hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Key stat to watch on Sunday will be the teams batting average with two outs as Madonna was 6-for-31 (.194) in April while the Panthers went 12-for-40 (.300) with two outs. Madonna did register six two-out RBI to five for DU.
The winner of the game will face the winner of the three-four matchup between third-seeded Indiana Tech and fourth-seeded Concordia University – Ann Arbor. The loser of the contest will face the loser of the one-six matchup of top-seeded UNOH and sixth-seeded Cornerstone University.
Both round two games are on Monday, May 8 with the winners playing at 9 a.m. at Racers Field while the losers play at noon at Mercy Field.
The three-day tournament will feature two games at UNOH's Racers Field on Sunday and Monday with a third game at Lourdes' Mercy Field in Toledo, Ohio. If a game is played on Wednesday, May 9, it will be held at UNOH at 12 p.m.
