LIVONIA, Mich. – Taylor Grzelakowski (SR/Fraser, Mich.) and Jerad Dokey (FR/Howell, Mich.) combined to go 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored as the Madonna University baseball team dispatched Marygrove College 6-3 at Illitch Ballpark on Saturday afternoon.

The Crusaders tallied eight hits in the win with Dokey (2-for-4), Grzelakowski (2-for-2) and Danny Blade (FR/Wyandotte, Mich.) (2-for-4) accounting for six of them. Dokey had two runs scored and an RBI while Grzelakowski had three RBI and a run scored.

Layne Gusler (SR/Woodhaven, Mich.), who pitched a scoreless inning of relief, earned his second win of the season. Mitchel Sykes (JR/Livonia, Mich.) got the start and pitched well as he allowed just two runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout over three innings. Ray Richard (SO/Taylor, Mich.) allowed a run on three hits with a strikeout in two innings while Michael Kanitra (JR/Livonia, Mich.), Marcus Doughten (JR/Taylor, Mich.) and Cliff Landess (JR/Carleton, Mich. ) combined for four strikeouts and one walk over the final three innings.

Grzelakowski got the Crusaders on the board first as he singled up the middle to plate Jerad Dokey, who led off the game for Madonna with a single to left center then stole second to get into scoring position.

The Mustangs made it a game in the second as they got to Madonna starter Mitchel Sykes for two runs on three hits. Back-to-back singles started the inning and a bunt loaded the bases. A dropped fly ball in right field, which turned into an out at second base, allowed the first Mustangs run to score and another fielder's choice with two outs added the second tally.

Danny Blade helped pull the Blue and Gold even in the bottom of the frame as he led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on Remington Sancho (FR/Woodhaven, Mich.)'s sacrifice bunt where he reached on an error. Sancho then stole second and Blade alertly scored on the throw down to second for the 2-2 tie.

A four-run fourth broke the game open and was the difference in the win for Madonna. Sancho opened the inning with a walk and moved to third on another Mustangs error off the bat of Sammy Lee (FR/Highland, Mich.). An Adrian Reed (FR/Westland, Mich.) groundout plated Sancho for the lead and a two-out single up the middle by Dokey made it 4-2. Grzelakowski followed with his 11th home run of the season, a no-doubter over the right field fence, for a four-run margin.

A leadoff double followed by an RBI single accounted for the final Mustangs run as the Crusaders earned their 20th Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference win and are now 20-10 in league play and 28-17 overall. The Mustangs fall to 6-35 overall and 5-26 in the WHAC.

Madonna is the fifth seed in the WHAC Tournament that begins on Sunday, May 7. The Crusaders will face No. 2 seed Davenport University at 3:30 p.m. at Racers Field in the St. Rita's Sports Complex in Lima, Ohio.
