LIVONIA, Mich. – Storms in the Grand Rapids area moved the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader between the Madonna University softball team and Cornerstone University forced the teams to play at University Field on Saturday afternoon where the Crusaders played as the visiting team and swept the series, 4-2 and 8-1.

The Crusaders (22-10, 11-2 WHAC) offense got right to work in game one as Morgan Kaiser (SR/Flat Rock, Mich.) led off with a single, Mikey Kish (SR/Allen Park, Mich.) doubled to center and Nicky Salloum (SR/Livonia, Mich.) delivered the big hit, a 3-run home run over the right field wall.

Crusaders' ace, Erin Combs (SR/Imlay City, Mich.), took a perfect game into the fourth inning and quickly got two outs before a single and a double cut into the lead. The top of the order for MU got the run back in the bottom of the inning as Kaiser led off with another base hit and scored on a two-out fielding error off the bat of Bri Giordano (SR/Plymouth, Mich.).

A single, error and fielder's choice cut the MU lead in half in the fifth, 4-2. Then with two on, Salloum turned a line drive into a double play to end the inning and the last scoring chance for the Golden Eagles (7- 23, 2-10 WHAC).

Combs allowed just two runs, one earned, on four hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts in her 14th complete game of the season.

Kish led the Crusaders 11-hit attack with a 3-for-4 day with one run scored while Salloum was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Kaiser had two hits and scored twice while Julia Cavagnini (JR/Livonia, Mich.) also had two hits.

It was all Madonna in game two with the lone Cornerstone run coming with two outs in the seventh.

The Crusaders stranded two runs in the first before getting on the board in the second. Kerstyn Comerzan (SO/Woodhaven, Mich.) tripled into the right field corner and scored two batters later on Cavagnini's single. Mallory Daschke (JR/Novi, Mich.) reached on an error before Kaiser plated Cavagnini with a sacrifice fly. Then, with two outs, Kish hit a ground-rule double to center for a 3-0 advantage.

The scoring continued in the third as Giordano began the inning with a double and scored on a two-out single up the middle from Morgan Thompson (SR/Fort Gratiot, Mich.). In the fifth, Giordano doubled again to lead off the inning and scored on a Comerzan fly out.

Daschke walked and scored the sixth run in the sixth then Comerzan led off with a walk and scored on an error in the seventh for a 7-0 advantage. Breanna Keethler (SR/Flat Rock, Mich.) followed a pair of errors with a two out single to right center for Madonna's final run.

Three hits led to a run in the bottom of the seventh for CU, but Paige Montague (JR/Clio, Mich.) closed the door for the victory.

Madisen Henry (FR/Swartz Creek, Mich.) earned the win as she allowed two hits and struck out four over four scoreless innings before Montague allowed one run on four hits over three innings.

The Blue and Gold tallied 11 hits led by Giordano and Kaiser who each had two. Seven different players recorded an RBI, Daschke scored three times, and Giordano, Comerzan scored twice, and Cavagnini added the eighth score.

The wins give Madonna a one game lead over UM-Dearborn for the top spot in the WHAC and a 2.5 game margin over seventh-ranked Davenport and Madonna's next opponent, Aquinas, who is receiving votes.

The Crusaders and Saints square off on Wednesday, Apr. 19 at University Field with first pitch of the doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. Live video and stats of the games will be available at www.madonnacrusaders.com/live.
