MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Madonna University baseball team scored six runs in the final five innings to down NCAA Division I Central Michigan University 6-4 at Theunissen Stadium on Wednesday night.

The win snapped a seven-game win streak for the Chippewas (17-15), who committed five errors in the loss, while Madonna has now won three straight and five of six to move to 22-12 on the year.

It wasn't an ideal start for the Crusaders as the home team scored a run on two hits in both the second and third innings for the early lead.

The game changed in the fifth as the Blue and Gold plated two runs on three hits and three CMU errors. Ryan Freemantle (SR/Mississauga, Ontario) reached on a one out, infield single and moved to third on a stolen base and throwing error. A walk put Jerad Dokey (FR/Howell, Mich.) on and a Ryan Lambrecht (SR/Lake Orion, Mich.) single tied the game.

The Crusaders added two more in the sixth on one hit and another error. Frankie Lucska (FR/Garden City, Mich.) walked with one out and Freemantle reach on a fielder's choice and moved to second on an error. Two walks to Matt Deneau (JR/Amherstburg, Ontario) and Dokey loaded the bases for Lambrecht who delivered again with a two-run single to center for a 4-2 advantage.

A walk and back-to-back singles for the home team cut the lead to one in the bottom of the frame, but Madonna wasn't done.

Lucska doubled with two outs in the seventh and scored on the fifth CMU error then Jared Hagan (JR/Dearborn Heights, Mich.) plated the sixth tally in the eighth as he drove in Dokey as part of three base hits in the inning.

Central Michigan plated a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly, but Cliff Landess (JR/Carleton, Mich. ) sealed the victory with his seventh save of the season.

Johno Rodriguez (SR/Sterling Heights, Mich.), who allowed one run on four hits with one walk in three innings of relief, earned the win to move to 6-3 on the season. Zack Schmidtke (SR/Dearborn Heights, Mich.) got the start and allowed two runs on four hits in his three innings with two strikeouts. Layne Gusler (SR/Woodhaven, Mich.) also appeared in the game and pitched two scoreless, one hit innings with one walk and a strikeout.

Lambrecht and Taylor Grzelakowski (SR/Fraser, Mich.) led the nine-hit attack with two each with Lambrecht also driving in four runs. Dokey finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks while Freemantle also scored twice.

The Crusaders are now 2-2 against the Chippewas since 2011 with the last win coming Mar. 13, 2012, a 6-3 victory. All four games were played on the road.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Apr. 15 when they welcome 13th-ranked and Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference leading University of Northwestern Ohio to Illitch Ballpark for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Live coverage of the games will be available via the Madonna Athletics Network at madonnacrusaders.com/live.

The third game of the series is being played at Comerica Park on Wednesday, Apr. 19 at 7 p.m. Tickets and information for that contest can be found at madonnacrusaders.com/CruasdersatComerica.
