RESULTS | SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. – The Madonna University women's golf team, which received votes in the first spring NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, finished the first round of the Heritage Hills Collegiate, hosted by Lawrence Technical University at the Heritage Hills Golf Club, fifth with a 341 on Saturday.
The event, which features four teams mentioned in the Coaches' Poll, consists of two 18-hole rounds with the top four scores for each team making up the team score.
Karen Zambrano (SO/Madrid, Colombia) paced the Crusaders with a first round 80 to tie for seventh. Natalie Blazo (SR/Dearborn, Mich.) finished the par-72, 5,921-yard opening round with an 82 to tie for 15th. Ayla Bogie (SR/Clio, Mich.) was third for Madonna with an 86 while Kelsey Edwards (SO/Ortonville, Mich.) rounded out the team score with a 93.
"We struggled on the first nine, but made some adjustments and improved on the back nine," said Crusaders Head Coach Scott Marzolino. "Tomorrow we build off our strong finish and more forward."
Falkner University (Ala.), the highest ranked program at the event at No. 17, leads the tournament with a 312 while the Eagles' Hanna Sager leads the tournament with an opening round 73. Marian University (Ind.), who is ranked 19th, is second with a 315 followed by the host Blue Devils who carded a 320. Saint Francis (Ind.), who is also receiving votes, is fourth with a 337 with Madonna fifth.
The Crusaders will compete in the second round of the Heritage Hills Collegiate on Sunday, Mar. 19 beginning on the 10th hole at 9:16 a.m.
