DEARBORN, Mich. – Behind a combined 23 kills and an attack percentage above .400 from junior Katie Breault, the No. 15-ranked Madonna University volleyball team worked its way to a 2-0 day to start the Early Bird Classic on Friday (Aug. 28) at the UMD Field House. MU downed Indiana University South Bend by a 3-1 final before sweeping Spring Arbor by a 3-0 final.

DEARBORN, Mich. – Behind a combined 23 kills and an attack percentage above .400 from junior Katie Breault, the No. 15-ranked Madonna University volleyball team worked its way to a 2-0 day to start the Early Bird Challenge on Friday (Aug. 28) at the UMD Field House. MU downed Indiana University South Bend by a 3-1 final before sweeping Spring Arbor by a 3-0 final.
Junior Miranda Fuerst and Breault led MU with 16 kills each in the day's opener as Breault hit .400 to go along with a .382 percentage from Fuerst as the Crusaders hit .294 as a team in the 3-1 win (25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17). Junior Nicole Oestrike joined the duo in double figure kills with 14 in the victory. Senior Spencer Stokes recorded 58 assists. Sophomore Karlie Kelly led the defense with 13 digs and junior Payton Maxheiner added 11 and senior Breanna Geile rounded out a trio in double figures with 10 digs.
MU jumped out to a 10-1 lead in set one before seeing ISUB pull within seven on a pair of occasions midway through the set. MU had three chances at set point before taking advantage of an IUSB service error to close out the 25-20 win.
Set two was back and forth early until MU doubled up ISUB with a 6-3 run to take a 17-12 lead. MU extended its lead to 21-16 before IUSB pulled got to within two, 24-22. Fuerst ended the set with her fifth kill of the frame to seal the 25-22 win.
IUSB won set three by a 25-23 final despite being out-hit and having four fewer kills that Madonna. MU was guilty of eight hitting errors and three service errors in dropping its first set of the season.
The fourth set was tight early as the two sides sat tied at 10. MU went on a 10-5 run to take a commanding 20-10 lead and did not look back, winning 25-17. MU hit .414 in the set with Oestrike posting five kills with Fuerst adding four as the Crusaders closed out the 3-1 victory.
Sierra Conklin led IUSB with 12 kills and Emily Kozinski added 10 in the loss.
Taking on former league for Spring Arbor in the day's final match Madonna swept its way to a 25-20, 25-12, 25-20, straight set win to improve to 4-0 on the year. Breault led MU with seven kills and a .429 attack percentage as MU hit .314 as a team in the win. Senior Emily Johnson and Oestrike added six kills each while Geile led MU with eight digs.
Set one saw seven ties, the final coming 13-all, before the Crusaders went on a 9-4 run to lead 22-17. An attack error from the Cougars gave MU its first set point and Kelly ended the set with a kill for the 25-20 win.
The second set was even early before MU pulled away thanks to an 11-2 run over the final 13 points of the set in the 25-12 win. Breault, Geile, Johnson and Oestrike each accounted for two kills as MU made just three errors in taking a 2-0 lead.
The Crusaders doubled up the Cougars 18-9 in kills in set three as MU close out the win 25-20. Oestrike led the Crusaders with five kills to go along with four each from junior Hannah Poole and Johnson.
Madonna wraps up the Early Bird with two more matches on Saturday (Aug. 29), facing off with No. 11-ranked Georgetown at 10 a.m. before closing the event with a 12 p.m. match against Judson.
