LIVONIA, Mich. – Behind a school-record seven blocked shots from senior forward Eoghann Stephens (Liss, England / Albion) the No. 19-ranked Madonna University men's basketball team avenged a loss earlier this season with a convincing 90-63 win over Concordia on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19) at the Activities Center.
Stephens – who tied Geoff Gaylor's record of seven rejections set during the 2010-11 season - was one of four Crusaders to reach double figures with 15 points. Junior guard Bobby Naubert (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) led all scorers with 16 points to go along with eight assists and six rebounds. Junior forward Fred Williams (Oak Park, Mich. / Berkley) and junior guard Travis Schuba (Rapid City, Mich. / Kalkaska) rounded out the quartet with 13 points and 10 points respectively.
After falling behind 8-2 to open the game, MU went on a 10-2 run over the span of just under two minutes to take the lead back at 12-10. Naubert accounted for four of the points and after CUAA tied the game at 12-all, the 5-11 guard canned a triple to put MU back in front, 15-12, with 14:03 left.
The two sided traded the lead over the ensuing four minutes until Naubert converted a Cardinal miscue into a layup and junior guard Matt Jenkins (Plymouth, Mich. / Fr. Gabriel Richard Catholic) then scored the next seven Crusader' points, giving the home side a 26-18 lead with 8:30 to go in the half.
A fast break alley-oop dunk from Schuba to Williams gave MU its first double-digit lead of the game, 32-21, with 6:30 left.
After Concordia cut the MU lead to eight, 35-27, with 3:14 to play, MU went on a 15-0 run to close the half, with Stephens accounting for five of the points to go along with 3-pointers from junior forward Derek Lennen and Schuba to send MU into the locker room with a 50-27 lead.
Schuba accounted for a pair of triples in the opening three minutes of the second half to push the MU lead out to 31, 60-29. The Crusaders did not let the lead slip back below the 30-point mark until the final minute of the game, winning by a final of 90-63.
Josh Fugate led CUAA with 12 points while Edison Vushaj added 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
The Crusaders close out their two-game homestand on Wednesday night (Jan. 23), hosting Lourdes in the second half of a women's and men's double header at the Activities Center. Tip time is set for 8 p.m.
