LIVONIA, Mich. – Senior forward Kaylee McGrath (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds to kick off the new year as the Madonna University women's basketball team downed Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference newcomer Lawrence Tech, 80-54, on Wednesday night (Jan. 2) at the Activities Center.

McGrath shot 9-for-11 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers in posting a season-best in points, just three away from matching her career-best. In addition to McGrath's efforts, sophomore guard Rachel Melcher (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Marian) added 16 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists in 22 minutes off of the bench for the Crusaders.

The Crusaders (9-6, 5-3 WHAC) were up six, 13-7, with 13:49 left in the first half when Melcher made the first of three straight free throws. Melcher's scores started a 20-4 run over the next 5:44 that gave MU a 33-11 lead. Melcher accounted for 11 points during the run while McGrath had six, including a triple as the home side took control.

McGrath hit another 3-pointer to make it 40-17, giving MU its largest lead of the half with 2:15 left in the half. The Crusaders doubled up the Blue Devils, 40-20, at halftime.

LTU cut the MU lead down to 17, 53-38, with 9:39 left in the game, but another MU run, this time a 12-2 run, gave MU its largest lead of the game, 27 (65-38), with 7:20 to go. The Crusaders never let their lead drop below 21 points the rest of the game in the victory

Hali Butler led LTU (4-8, 2-6 WHAC) with 15 points to go along with an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double from Jackie Hood. Butler accounted for the Blue Devils' only 3-pointer as LTU shot just 5.9 percent (1-for-17) from beyond the arc.
MU wraps up its brief two-game homestand with a 1 p.m. tipoff against Siena Heights on Saturday (Jan. 5) at the Activities Center. The game is the front half of a women's and men's double header against the Saints.
