CHICAGO, Ill. – A 30-point performance from junior guard Travis Schuba (Rapid City, Mich. / Kalkaska) led the No. 25-ranked Madonna University men's basketball team to a 66-53 win over Roosevelt to close the Crusaders' non-conference slate at the Goodman Center on Sunday (Dec. 30).
Schuba connected on eight 3-pointers as part of a 10-for-17 day shooting from the floor. Junior guard Bobby Naubert (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) joined Schuba in double figures with 12 points and a team-best four assists.
A jumper from Schuba broke a 4-4 tie in the first half and the Crusaders never trailed again in the game. The jumper was part of a 20-7 run by the Crusaders that featured a trio of Schuba triples to go along with scores from sophomore forward Donald Owens (Detroit, Mich. / Inkster) and junior guard Zach Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich. / Fowlerville) that gave MU a 24-11 lead with 11:27 left in the half.
The Madonna lead grew to as many as 15 points but Roosevelt was able to trim its deficit to five, 26-21, thanks to a 10-0 run but MU stopped the run and took a 34-26 lead into the half.
Back-to-back Shuba 3-pointers and a Naubert jumper opened the second half scoring as MU went on top by 16, 42-26, just 1:43 into the period. The Crusaders allowed their lead to fall into single digits just once the remainder of the game, winning by a 13, 66-53.
Jeremiah Jackson led Roosevelt with 20 points and 19 rebounds in the loss.
MU now returns to conference play, hosting league newcomer Lawrence Tech in the first ever meeting between the two sides. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 2) at the Activities Center following the MU / LTU women's game set to tip at 6 p.m.
